Sorry to everyone who is still using it, but BeTwittered will be going offline on March 20, 2010.

Sorry to take it down, it was a very fun project and it’s was really great getting feedback and hearing from people who use it.

Robert

p.s. Versions of of Betwittered for Status.net/Identi.ca are staying up :)

Here’s a question: If BeTwittered has now been taken down, how comes the Identica (and others?) alternatives are still allowed to run? Is it specifically something against Twitter? Could higher volume of traffic be the answer?

Betwittered was great, sad to see it go. I am trying Anyscreen from the above comments, can’t say that I like the bold blue bars, but seems to be good.

  12. Reply Matt Apperson Mar 29, 2010 3:59 am

@schenck You can choose themes from the settings menu

  13. Reply Matthew Copperwaite Apr 28, 2010 9:37 am

Looks like Anyscreen has run out of bandwidth. I guess that explains why this project could not be continued. Far too popular.

Sorry guys, but the reason AnyScreen is gone, is my server got hacked, and those files deleted. I have simply not had the time to re-build it as paying jobs have had to take priority. Again, I am very sorry :(

Betwittered for twitter is not back, but Betwittered for a few other services is still up. There is Betwittered-Identica and Betiwittered-TwitArmy and BeTwittered-FLOSS.pro. Those are Twitter-like services running on http://status.net services.

A small rant: The status.net implementations are not big like twitter, but better in the sense that they are separate “islands” of messaging that can connect to each other, just like email services do. That means that as users of the services we aren’t dependent on any one, or locked in because our friends are on just one. An identi.ca user can chat with a Twit-Army user, again, like email where a gmail user can communicate with a hotmail user.

Dont assume, though, that I’ve abandoned twitter because of this, I just couldn’t afford to keep a Betwittered server running to handle 30-50 thousand users a day. It had started as just a hobby for my own use!
